Shops, barns and greenhouses lose fans, heaters and equipment. A long outage on a working property has a direct cost that an in-town outage rarely does.

Sizing for high start-up loads

Motors draw several times their running current in the first moments after they start. Well pumps, sump pumps, compressors and refrigeration all do this, and on a rural property several may start at the same time. A generator sized only for running load will trip or stall when the well pump kicks in. The load review counts every motor you want covered, including those in outbuildings, and sizes the unit for the moment everything starts together.

That does not always mean the largest generator. Splitting coverage — whole-home for the house, selected circuits in the shop or barn — keeps size and fuel use in proportion to what actually needs protection.

Propane on the concessions

Natural gas mains do not reach most rural Norfolk properties, so propane is the standard fuel. Many properties already have a tank, and the generator can often share it if the tank and regulator are sized for the combined demand. Where a new tank is needed, its size is chosen for the outage duration you want to cover. Your propane supplier is part of the conversation, and the connection is made by a licensed gas technician.
